It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our father David J Burns who left us suddenly at home in Palmerston on May 10th, 2024, in his 89th year. Loving husband of Mary Faye (Darroch) for 60 years. Proud father of Bridget Burns (Andrew Toms) and Megan Ker (Jason Ker). Remembered by his younger brother John Burns and sisters-in-law of Diane Tilden and Dilly Burns. Predeceased by brother Bill Burns and sister Fran McDowell, and her husband Terry, and sister-in-law Gaile Thompson. David was born in Calgary and raised in Port Credit, Ontario. After completing his B.A.Sc. at University of Toronto in 1960, he took a teaching position at Norwell DSS in Palmerston, where he taught math, science and electrical shop for 17 years. He was a proficient golfer, avid softball pitcher and keen bridge player. In 1977 he retired from teaching and Burns Woodworking was formed, creating custom cabinetry for the next 24 years around southern Ontario. With a strong interest in local politics, David was Mayor of Palmerston from 1980 to 1984 and then for the Town of Minto from 2003 to 2006, and continued to be active in politics. He was a passionate gardener, often boasting of his beets, and actively engaging in environmental and climate issues. The projects with family and friends restoring the historic Burns cottage on the Severn River brought David great satisfaction, a tradition our family will carry on with pride. He will be dearly missed by family, friends, colleagues and past students. A celebration of life will be held in the Frank Lambier Legion, Palmerston on Friday June 14, 2024 from 1:00 to 4:00pm with remembrances at 2:00pm. As an expression of sympathy, donations can be made to the Maitland Conservation Foundation or the Palmerston Hospital MRI Fund. Arrangements entrusted to Heritage Funeral Home.

Andrea died peacefully at home, surrounded by family and loved ones. She wrote this obituary: Living with cancer for the past decade or so, I’ve learned about patience and presence. Being with what shows up, especially what we don’t want, is a fierce teacher. This ‘living with dying’ time has also been a teacher for my beloveds: Daniel (Beirne) who shows me daily what love is, our dear sons, Liam (Kylie) and Conor – show up and respond from their hearts, making my heart sing. Our grandchildren, Sloane and Sawyer, bless us with their bright, golden spirits. Being “Birdie” with “Grandad” was incredible! I loved every moment. Dan’s big, smiling family embraced me warmly from day one. My sister Stephanie (Glenn) walked beside me with love. My parents, the late Glenn and Sue Bird taught me to embrace life with all its challenges. It is hard to leave this world, yet I have been blessed with a creative and love-filled life. Making and teaching art (the hive at the Alton Mill) brought deep joy. Family and dear friends, I love you and always will. The love we share does not die with me. Thank you for walking alongside me (and us) with such courage and grace. I have been truly blessed in this life. Last words from Mary Oliver, my fave poet….

“Instructions for living a life: Pay attention. Be astonished. Tell about it.”

Celebration of life in Guelph at a later date. (Wear bright colours.)
